The Pond

Butterfly Koi

The pond as it is today:November 11, 2006

When I first moved into my garden, the only visible color was green. Construction of the pond was the first step to bringing in wildlife and color. I chose this portion because it would providea focal point from the inside of the house and it would also receive shade during the hot summer days.

The two large shrubs that occupied the space were removed. Next, the outline of the desired pond was made using my garden hose and left over spray paint from an earlier project. The waterfall on the right and the skimmer on the left were then positioned and outlined as well.

My first excavation was 1 to 1 1/2 ft. deep . Next, I outlined the shelf which would only appear on the waterfall side. The remainder portion in the middle would slope from 1 to 2ft. where the fish would be fed. Some of the soil was used to hold the waterfall in place. If you notice, the waterfall shelf has been left untouched.

Being a small lady, I alloted myself 2 weeks to dig, relocate sprinklers and remove roots without injury!

Once the pond was dug, the underlayment and pond liner were placed. The hole for the skimmer was dug and the skimmer was put in leveled to the ground and desired water level. The lights were layed on top of the rock layered walls carefully hiding cords.

Here is the final product of my labor.

My first water lily.

Brown widow protecting her eggs

The brown widow spider is closely related to a black widow spider. Some say its venom is more fierce but due to its nature to back away instead of defending its territory it won't release as much venom. The bite area is more painful but less harmful than that of a black widow. The brown widow has only recently made its home in Orange County. These are the cities it has been discovered in: Anaheim, Brea, Buena Park, Fullerton, Orange Tustin, Yorba Linda and now in my very own backyard!
